New Year, New Goals, and the Power of Getting Knocked Down (And Back Up Again)

As we ring in the new year, it’s natural to think about resolutions, goals, and ways to improve ourselves. But sometimes, we get so caught up in the excitement of making grand plans that we forget the simple truth: no matter how much you prepare, life will punch you in the face. The key is to get back up again.

Let’s start with something that might seem trivial but is oddly relatable: ratings. How often have you encountered a rating system that doesn’t make sense? You know, a scale where 1-5 stars just isn’t enough? Maybe it’s 2.5 stars… out of 3? It sounds absurd, but it’s the kind of thing that frustrates us all, whether it’s restaurant reviews or podcast ratings.

A recent conversation revolved around this idea, poking fun at how ratings are often inflated or downplayed to suit the narrative we want. It’s funny, right? That weird game we play when discussing how we’re doing in life or work. But here’s the deal: regardless of the stars or numbers, what really matters is the work behind the scenes. And sometimes, the scale just doesn’t reflect the effort you’ve put in.

Now, let’s talk about manifestation—the idea that you can just think your way into success. While the power of positive thinking has its place, simply wishing for things to happen isn’t a substitute for hard work.

Here’s the truth: you can’t just sit back and expect life to deliver because you visualized it. You’ve got to put in the effort. You’ve got to hustle. There’s a difference between manifesting and working toward something with determination. Sure, your habits shape your future, but that future doesn’t come by thinking alone. It’s a combination of hard work, focus, and patience.

The metaphor of life punching you in the face isn’t just about physical setbacks. It’s about the inevitable failures, disappointments, and challenges that come your way. The thing is, we all experience them, and the difference between success and failure often boils down to one thing: whether you get back up.

Remember that song? “I get knocked down, but I get up again, you’re never gonna keep me down.” It’s not just a catchy tune—it’s a philosophy for life. Every time you get knocked down, you have two choices: stay down or get back up. And here’s the kicker: you’re never going to be kept down unless you let yourself stay there.

As we look toward 2025, let’s leave behind the idea that we can predict exactly what will happen. Life is messy, unpredictable, and sometimes, it feels like you’re just waiting for the next punch. But what matters is that you keep showing up, keep doing the work, and keep getting up when you’re knocked down. Whether it’s your career, your health, or your relationships, resilience is key.

This year, make a goal to embrace the challenges and setbacks. No matter how hard it gets, keep moving forward. Even if you get knocked down, stand up. Even if you fail, learn and try again. If you do this, you’ll see the growth that comes from perseverance, and you’ll be better prepared for whatever the next year throws your way.

Now, back to those resolutions. Setting goals is great, but let’s not kid ourselves—sometimes those goals need to evolve. As we step into 2025, maybe it’s time to think less about forcing things to happen and more about letting things unfold while putting in the work. Whether it’s growing a podcast, booking more shows, or simply pushing through a tough season, focus on taking one step at a time. Small progress is still progress, and the key is consistency.

Don’t be afraid of getting knocked down, because it’s going to happen. Instead, embrace it as part of the journey. Every time you rise, you’re one step closer to achieving your goals. So keep pushing, and don’t forget: no matter what life throws at you, you’re never gonna keep me down.

Happy New Year! Let’s make 2025 the year of resilience, growth, and, of course, a little bit of fun along the way.
